About Us

The City vs City Firefighter Salary & Pension Comparator is a free micro-utility built by the First Responder Utilities Network — an independent publisher dedicated to creating transparent, data-driven tools for the first-responder community. Our mission is to empower firefighters, paramedics, and lateral-transfer candidates with clear, side-by-side compensation comparisons so they can make informed career and relocation decisions.

Municipal firefighter compensation is complex. Base wages, FLSA 207(k) overtime thresholds, shift differentials, paramedic stipends, hazardous-duty pay, and pension multipliers all vary dramatically from one city to the next — and the differences are rarely obvious from a job posting. We built this comparator to bring that scattered public data into a single, clean interface.

How We Analyze Municipal CBAs

Every city profile in our database is compiled from publicly available municipal collective bargaining agreements (CBAs), official city pay scales, and published pension system documents. We extract the entry-level base salary, the pension multiplier (per year of service or flat percentage), the employee pension contribution rate, the overtime multiplier, and the state income tax rate. We then pair each city with a cost-of-living (COL) index anchored to the U.S. national average of 100.

Our FLSA overtime model applies the Section 207(k) 28-day work-period threshold of 212 hours — roughly 2,767 hours annually — and calculates overtime at 1.5× the regular hourly rate derived from each city's base salary and selected shift schedule. Tax estimates use 2024 federal brackets, state-specific standard deductions, and FICA (7.65%), assuming a single filer with no dependents.

Editorial Standards

We hold ourselves to the E-E-A-T principles — Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. All figures are educational estimates drawn from public sources and are reviewed for internal consistency before publication. We do not accept payment from any fire department or municipality to alter, rank, or feature a city's data.

Municipal pay schedules, pension tiers, and stipend structures change frequently through contract renegotiations and legislative action. We update our database periodically, but we strongly encourage every user to verify current compensation directly with the hiring fire department's human resources office before making career or relocation decisions. See our Terms of Service for the full educational disclaimer.
